"There is simply no more cost effective economic development program of any type, on any scale, anywhere in the country than Main Street."
- Donovan D. Rypkema, Economics of Historic Preservation

About Us

Since our founding in 2001, the Oyster Bay Main Street Association (OBMSA) has been at the forefront of revitalization efforts in downtown Oyster Bay.  We do this by following the Main Street Approach to downtown revitalization, as established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Work is done by volunteers in four grass root committees:

Organization Committee

  • Led fundraising and grant writing efforts
  • Worked to attract members and volunteers
  • Facilitated a partnership with the Oyster Bay - East Norwich Central School District (Project L.E.A.R.N.S.)
  • Started the Main Street Newsletter informing members of our events and grants

Promotion Committee

  • Organized the Oyster Bay Main Street Association Garden Tour
  • Organized the Yuletide Candle Walk over the holiday season, highlighting our many historic churches throughout the downtown
  • Organized the summer event Dancing in the Street, now in its fourth year!
  • Launched the Oyster Bay Farmers' Market before giving it over to a professional market manager

Design Committee

  • Improved Townsend Square and West Main Street parking lots
  • Enhanced the streetscape through new streetlamps, flowers and benches
  • Allocated over $1 million of grant funds into the downtown for: building renovations, facade improvements, and a sign plan for the downtown
  • Directly and indirectly helped to improve over 70 downtown buildings since 2001

Economic Restructuring Committee

  • Provided support for an emerging art sector in downtown Oyster Bay
  • Supported Existing businesses
  • Helped to attract over 50 new businesses that have opened since 2001.
  • Worked with local Real Estate Agents to inform them and potential new business owners of the grants available
