Sagamore Hill

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
Visit and see Sagamore Hill as it was when U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt lived there. The house is open for guided tours from Wed – Sun, 10:00am – 4:00pm. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 15 and under. A Visitor Center and Book Store, and small exhibition on Roosevelt are also available to view free of charge. The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk.

 

The Oyster Bay Main Street Association has prepared Design Guidelines for properties in downtown Oyster bay. These guidelines general recommendations for facade elements, facade materials, storefront and windows, appropriate painting, gutters and leading, appropriate signage, and lighting. Property owners by following these guidelines, will assure Oyster Bay is an attractive place for prospective busineses, customers, and residents alike.

Examples
Here are some selected examples of facade and signage improvements in Oyster Bay. Scroll over the picture to see what the building appeared like BEFORE improvements.

20 Audrey Ave
Paint removed on pilasters and arch to reveal original stone detailing. Contemporary lamps on ground level replaced with more historically appropriate ones. Today home of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.

10 Audrey Ave
Brick detailing added at first floor level to blend with 20 Audrey Ave next door. Upper floors repainted. Historically appropriate windows and doors installed.

95 Audrey Ave
Contemporary awning replaced with more accurate period awning. Historic storefront windows retained. Door replaced with one more suitable for a commercial establishment.

19 E. Main St
A complete transformation. Giving an otherwise understated modern building a facelift and making a landmark quality building. Note historically accurate wood and gilt sign.

30 E. Main St
Shed roof between first and second floor replaced with bracket, dentil, and sunburst frieze. Ground floor level opened up to make more suitable for retail use. Fishscale shingles in gable end.

78 South St
Siding removed and regional shingle style utilized. Handsome dentiled cornice revealed which had previously been boxed in. More substantial looking shutters added at second floor level.

179 South St
A total transformation. Arched form to left repeated in entrance on right side. False mansard removed and string course added. "Not Just Art" sign playful yet simple, giving it a historic feel.
